The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is a double-decked suspension bridge that connects the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn on Long Island in New York City at the Narrows, the reach connecting the relatively protected upper bay with the larger lower bay.

The bridge is named for Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first known European navigator to enter New York Harbor and the Hudson River, while crossing The Narrows. It has a center span of 4,260 feet (1,298 m) and was the largest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1964, until it was surpassed by the Humber Bridge in the United Kingdom in 1981. It now has the eighth longest center span in the world, and is the largest suspension bridge in the United States. Its massive towers can be seen throughout a good part of the New York metropolitan area, including from spots in all five boroughs of New York City.

The bridge furnishes a critical link in the local and regional highway system. It is the starting point of the New York City Marathon. The bridge marks the gateway to New York Harbor; all cruise ships and most container ships arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey must pass underneath the bridge and thus must be built to accommodate the clearance under the bridge.

Summary

This arch bridge was a winning entry in a British design competition that asked de­signers to design a new bridge that would add to a series of other bridges across the Great Ouse River. Prince Charles was present at the grand opening of the bridge.

Design Concept

 The desire was to create a memorable landmark representing the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The steel arches angle like butterfly wings produce a feeling of openness to the sky.

Completed in 1998, the bridge is used as a pedestrian crossing that con­nects two sides of a park. The river is used for rowing traffic, with a boathouse located near the bridge.

The bridge is approached by trails that the bridge connects. The trees around the river slightly limit the view of the bridge from the road, yet at the same time they help reinforce the organic nature of the bridge structure.

Financial/Social Impact

The annual river festival has brought more at­tention to the region and improved tourism.

Once a year the Butterfly Bridge becomes a grandstand for a river festival. The bridge im­proved the experience of the river and brought in more public participation during the river festivals .

من اساساً آدم ورزشی نیستم اما می فهمم که حوادث فوتبالی این روز‌ها واقعاً یک آزمون مهم اخلاقی و سیاسی است. در سال‌های اخیر که از همه چیز به خصوص از جوانان خیلی استفاده ابزاری شده است، فوتبال به دلیل اهمیت آن دچار دست اندازی ‌های سیاسی فراوانی شده است. مدیریت ورزش در این سال‌ها بیشتر از همیشه نگاه ابزاری به ورزش و فوتبال داشته است و تلاش کرده است آن را در خدمت حمایت از دولت و رئيس آن قرار دهد. بعضی از نظریه پردازان ها گفته اند فوتبال برای خودش یک دین است.  ظاهرا مسئولان فعلی هم بر این باورند که فوتبال دین است و آن را عین سیاست تلقی می کنند. همچنان که رئیس جمهور نیز خیلی وقت برای نشان دادن خود در عرصه ی ورزش وقت گذاشته است. حضور در تمرین‌های فوتبال، سفر به کشور‌های دیگر برای برنامه‌های ورزشی و شرکت در مسابقاتی که احتمال پیروزی در آن داده می‌شده (که البته معمولا به شکست منجر شد!) نمونه‌هایی از سایه سنگین سیاست بر ورزش است.تا وقتی ورزش که سرمایه‌ی ملی است و موفقیت آن در دور ماندن از سیاست است چنین دستخوش تبلیغات سیاسی شود، مشکل ورزش پابرجاست. خیلی‌ها از وقتی که علی دایی که روزی افتخار تمام عیار ایران بود سرمربی تیم ملی ایران شد با او مخالف بودند. شاید به این دلیل که سرمایه یک ملت نباید رد جایگاهی بحث انگیز قرار گیرد حرف بر حقی می زدند اما شکستن همه کاسه کوزه‌ها بر سر فردی که افتخار ملی بود ومی توانست با پیروزی تیم ملی بر عربستان سعودی کلی محبوبتر شود درست نیست. باور کنیم مشکل فوتبال علی دایی نیست. مشکل سیاست تبلیغاتی دولتی است که چنین بحران‌هایی را بر ورزش کشور و بخصوص بر فوتبال تحمیل کرده است. این کمال بی‌وفایی است که علی دایی به تنهایی قربانی این شکست شود و از اخلاق جوانمردی ایرانی به دور است. ورزش باید بر اساس قواعد مستقل ورزشی اداره شود و دولت تنها حامی این قواعد باشد وتا وقتی چنین نشود این بحران ها هست. کاش دولتمردان می‌فهمیدند که استفاده تبلیغاتی و ابزاری از ورزش آنها را برای رسیدن به اهداف سیاسی و انتخاباتی کمک نمی‌کند. « محمد علی ابطحی »
